How NOT to Work at Gossip Genie

I can hardly contain my excitement at the thought of my company, Gossip Genie, turning 2 years old next month. I did freelance work from May of 2009 until January 2010, at which point, I formed an LLC. Therefore, the official birthday is next month. It has been an incredible journey with ups and downs, like everything else. I can honestly say that there is nothing else I would rather be doing than this. I am so grateful for all of the wonderful clients we have and the amazing referral sources. Gossip Genie would not be where it is today without a great team in place. With exciting new business opportunities on the horizon and marketing tactics in place, we are thrilled to announce that we are hiring. Here comes the fun part…after posting the job information on Craigslist, the applications came flooding in.

A couple of recommendations for those of you looking for jobs – PDF your resume, that adds a little bit of professionalism to your response.

Open Table – THE RESERVATIONS WEBSITE IS NOT A “SPECIAL SKILL”

Don’t include “Salary requirements” in your resume:

I would omit this previous work experience…

What you did almost 17 years ago on Saturdays does not interest me!

The best is when people try to adapt their resumes to include their “social media skills” – it’s always at the end of the resume making it all the more obvious:

So the search continues – if you or anyone you know is interested in working at Gossip Genie, please send a resume and cover letter to Jacqui@GossipGenie.com

Tying the NOT

Do you ever wonder what is behind the profile picture? The majority of what is broadcasted on social networking sites is a distorted version of reality. Or rather, it’s processed as such by the people we call friends, followers, connections and so on. We are all following an edited version of each other’s lives. Do you know the underlying issues your friends are dealing with via Facebook? Most of us do not. It’s easy to feel excluded from events involving friends just by browsing through Facebook photos and FourSquare check-ins.

Here is a prime example of how Facebook can lead to a skewed perception of reality for people.

I did some modeling for a couture dress boutique in Chicago. I modeled a few different wedding dresses and the pictures were used a lot more than I expected. They were in Chicago Magazine, Chicago Social, on this website and featured on Daily Candy in the spring of 2008. Before I met my current fiancé, I was dating someone for about 3 years, let’s call him X. X took it upon himself to post these pictures of me on his Facebook page. Immediately, people thought X and I had tied the knot, eloped! My mother was getting phone calls from the parents of my friends asking about my recent nuptials, my inbox was full from inquiring friends and X had to turn off his phone because it wouldn’t stop ringing the entire night. After that snafu, we decided it would be wise to take down the pictures or in the world of Facebook, get a divorce.

On October 29th, I will walk down the aisle for the first time but according to many distant Facebook friends, it will be my second.

Barbie Media

My obsession with Barbie is no secret. At the age of 3, I received my first Barbie and it was love at first sight. Little did I know that decades later, I would still be connected to Barbie, virtually, that is! Barbie does an awesome job with social media, check her out on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, FourSquare. Follow Barbie, you won’t be disappointed, her status updates are funny, cute & clever. Brands like Barbie need to make this kind of dedicated effort to implementing a social media campaign. This is the only way that these brands can truly stay connected to their customers. Now that I am a fan of Barbie on Facebook, I am reminded of my childhood on a daily basis which brings a smile to my face every time.

Osama Bin Laden found in Abbottabad is Notta Bad for Social Media.

Where were you when JFK died? Where were you when the World Trade Centers collapsed?  And now another memorable one for Americans, where were you when you found out Osama had been captured & killed? It used to be that we would find out from a friend watching the news or overhear someone talking about it. Now thanks to Twitter & Facebook, it is safe to say this is where most people will remember hearing about the significant moments in history.  Below are some statistics that can give you a better understanding on what was happening on the Internet that fateful Sunday night.

-From a poll posted on Mashable.com,  31% found out about Osama’s death on Twitter and 20% found out on Facebook.; both mediums beating out T.V., text, and other sources.

-12.4 million tweets about Bin Laden were sent out per HOUR.  And 3,000 tweets were sent out per SECOND between the hours of 10:45 p.m. and 2:20 a.m. ET.

-Foursquare users are creating check-ins like “Osama’s Grave.”  Also, an Osama joke has already been circulating:  “Looks like Osama Bin Laden signed up for Foursquare on the wrong day.“

-There are currently over 474,000 “Likes” for the Facebook page “Osama Bin Laden is Dead” and has increased by 167 since I began writing this post.

-There were over 13,000 videos uploaded to YouTube-mostly of reporters as well as cities where huge celebrations were taking places.

-“Bin Laden” searches on Google were up 1 Million percent on Sunday night.

-13 Minutes elapsed Sunday night between the first tweet credited with breaking the news of Osama bin Laden’s death, and the change to his online Wikipedia entry reflecting that he had died.
